In School Clay Workshops for Infants and Juniors

I also offer in school workshops using clay for all age groups from rising fives to ten and eleven year olds.

Children will learn about the different qualities of clay in its various states, and suggest words to describe them. from ‘sloppy’slip to vitreous fired ceramic (‘sounds like iron!’). They talk about where clay comes from and how it changes during the firing process.

Models made by the younger age groups use very simple techniques such as printing and draping over a former, while the older children will learn rolling, joining, coiling, moulding and modelling skills.

Topics are taken from the school’s existing curriculum so the workshops act as an extension to or a development of the children’s current learning.

No kiln in school?

I will accept delivery of dry models to fire in my own kiln. When the models are returned to school the children can colour them using readymix or acrylic paint.

I charge £200 a day, plus material costs (about 50 pence per pupil) and a charge to cover electricity of £10 per firing of my own kiln.
